Executive Function is Your Friend

To be short and to the point,

That is an Executive Function!

To walk out of the house the first time you open the door is an Executive Function!

To tell a really simple story without an ‘er’ or an ‘um’ is an Executive Function!

Do you feel the rhythm here?

To pick up clothes and to put them away is an Executive Function!

Are you always low on gas? It requires planning to get to the gas station before you’re stressed!

That is an Executive Function!

Have you been taking notes? That is an Executive Function!

Now, fill in these blanks.

An executive function is planning before (          ) the house.

An executive function is planning before (           ) the clothes.

An executive function is planning before (           ) the dinner.

Executive function (EFD) and self-regulation skills are the mental processes

that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.

In addition, EFD encompasses

  • Working memory that governs our ability to retain and manipulate distinct pieces of information over short periods of time.
  • Mental flexibility that helps us to sustain or shift attention in response to different demands or to apply different rules in different settings.
  • Self-control which enables us to set priorities and resist impulsive actions or responses. (Harvard)

I work with people ages 16 and above.

When clients begin working on their EFD with me, we go through an EFD Assessment, (the Gold Standard in my profession). It is a relationship-building process for instance, to discuss the sensory inability to be on time, to organize a work task, or to make a meal.
